When steamboat passengers stepped onto the wharfs of the seaside resorts of eastern Quebec, they did not expect to be welcomed like royalty. But they were, by a lively crowd of curious spectators, perhaps a fiddler and certainly drivers sitting patiently on their horse-drawn carriages. The decor was nonetheless quite simple: a broad wharf, sometimes a small building for shelter from wind and rain and, all around, nature in all its splendor.
